We drove to Turkey in our car in the summer — the roads are excellent, but the traffic is completely different from Europe or Russia. Drivers often don't use their indicators, may stop unexpectedly or enter a roundabout without giving way.

Once, someone slightly bumped our bumper in a car park and just drove off. It's a good thing we had compulsory insurance — we filed a report, and the insurance company covered all the costs.

Without a policy, we would have had to pay out of our own pocket, and the amounts are not insignificant. Plus, the police regularly check documents, especially for cars with foreign number plates.

So, my advice to anyone planning to drive in Turkey is to take out insurance in advance. It really saves you a lot of stress and problems.

After travelling around Turkey, I realised how important it is to have valid car insurance. Traffic here is very heavy, especially in tourist cities such as Istanbul, Antalya and Izmir. Many drivers behave impulsively: they may change lanes abruptly, park in unexpected places or fail to keep their distance.

Even a minor collision or scratch in a car park can result in serious expenses if you don't have insurance. The Turkish police immediately check for compulsory insurance (trafik sigortası), and if you don't have it, your car may be taken off the road until you take out a policy.

Therefore, taking out insurance in advance is not just a formality, but a matter of peace of mind. With a policy, you feel more confident knowing that in the event of an accident or inspection, you are protected and acting within the law.

  • Conclusion: roads in Turkey are only safe when you follow the rules and have insurance recognised by the local authorities. This is not a waste of money, but a sensible investment in your safety.

We drive to Turkey every year, and now we always take out insurance in advance. Once, we were stopped by the police near Izmir — the first thing they asked for was our trafik sigortası. It's a good thing everything was in order, otherwise they might have forbidden us to continue our journey.
Traffic in Turkey is heavy, especially in coastal areas, and without insurance you are really taking a risk. The policy is inexpensive, but it gives you peace of mind — both on the road and with the law.
  • Tip: take out insurance online, it only takes a couple of minutes, but then you won't have to explain yourself to the police.
